pulsions graphiques
having come to the end of a cycle with my paintings of the unknown world, my artistic universe inspired by the subconscious, acting in the form of a diary, i set out on a quest to continue this work. i was excited by the idea of representing ideas coming from feelings that i perceived during my internship at guerillagrafik here in lyon.
so, embracing the junior graphic designer that i am, i set about drawing other versions of incognita, including one for the text. this idea of drawing several versions must have been reinforced by the singular activity of one of my placement supervisors, thomas balmer, who often draws variants of his fonts for guerillagrafik’s professional projects. then another reference was added to my stay here, that of the atmosphere of the slopes of the croix-rousse district, with its many graffiti and wild posters. i then had the idea of populating my unknown world with various companies for which i would create their visual identity. i reduced the angle of attack by making one or more advertising posters instead, which allows me to give the company a certain aesthetic while using graphic forms that i can reuse in a catalyst object.
the main aim of this book is to express, through these various companies and their services through texts, posters and their attributes, the various graphic impulses that inhabit me and all of us as designers. in fact, especially at the start of our careers, we come into contact with a number of graphic inspirations, mainly from social networks. these sometimes fascinating images, sometimes echoing deep-seated inspirations from childhood, as it was the case for me with the graphic aesthetics of the british music group muse, touch us and give us an impulse — the urge to reproduce the visual aesthetic of the image directly into the design of the professional or academic project we are immersed in. of course, from the outside, we notice the absurdity, but when we’re immersed in the practice, the perception of our work is very different, and we sometimes don’t even realize it... the book then takes on a very ideal form, as systematic as it is punk, presenting a sort of gigantic designer fantasy tinged with my own artistic universe.
diving into the work allows us to be overwhelmed by the diversity of information, making us not very clearheaded about the situation, directly reflecting this biased perception phenomenon as a designer, while also referring to my personal feeling about the city of lyon, where i sometimes felt so disoriented that i literally lost my bearings, either because of or thanks to the systematic and immersive architecture of the city. thank you for your interest in my practice, and enjoy the immersion!
